Vuvale supports Australian clients with professional services. Our client is an Australian consumer lending business specialising in small to medium unsecured personal loans and is building a new underwriting team focused on quality, consistency and accountability.

 

The Opportunity

We’re seeking an experienced Underwriter – Unsecured Consumer Lending to assess personal loan applications and make timely, evidence-based lending decisions in line with responsible lending obligations, internal credit policy and customer service standards. You’ll balance prudent risk assessment with customer suitability and regulatory compliance while helping shape a growing underwriting function.

 

What You’ll Do

  • Assess unsecured consumer loan applications for small to medium personal loans, including review of income, expenses, bank statements, repayment capacity, credit behaviour and loan purpose.
  • Apply responsible lending principles to determine whether a loan is suitable, affordable and consistent with the customer’s requirements and objectives.
  • Conduct customer verification checks, including identity, employment, income, bank account ownership and supporting documentation, in line with internal procedures.
  • Review applications for potential red flags, including affordability concerns, hardship indicators, vulnerability, repeat borrowing, dishonored payments, gambling activity, account conduct issues and inconsistencies in customer information.
  • Make sound lending recommendations or decisions within delegated authority and refer applications for further review where required.
  • Maintain clear, accurate and compliant file notes to support assessment outcomes, decisions and customer conversations.
  • Communicate with customers by phone and email to request information, clarify application details, explain next steps and provide professional service throughout the assessment process.
  • Work closely with customer service, compliance, operations and management teams to resolve assessment queries and ensure applications are progressed efficiently.
  • Contribute to process improvement, workflow development, quality assurance and team capability as the underwriting function grows.
  • Support a positive, accountable and compliance-focused team culture, including assisting with onboarding, coaching or knowledge sharing where appropriate. Apply responsible lending principles to determine whether each loan is suitable, affordable and consistent with the customer’s requirements and objectives.
  • Understand and apply relevant Australian consumer credit obligations, including responsible lending requirements and internal underwriting standards.
  • Assess applications fairly, consistently and objectively, with customer suitability and financial wellbeing at the centre of each decision.
  • Protect customer information and comply with privacy, data security, record-keeping and verification requirements.
  • Identify and appropriately escalate potential vulnerability, hardship, fraud, complaints, compliance issues or unusual customer circumstances.
  • Complete assessments in a manner that is audit-ready, well documented and aligned with company policy and procedure.

 

 

What You’ll Bring

  • Minimum 2 years’ experience in underwriting, credit assessment, loan processing or a similar role with an Australian lender.
  •  Experience assessing unsecured consumer lending, personal loans, small amount credit contracts, medium amount credit contracts or similar regulated credit products is highly desirable.
  • Sound understanding of responsible lending, customer verification, affordability, lending suitability and Australian consumer credit obligations.
  • Strong analytical skills and the ability to interpret bank statements, income information, customer circumstances and supporting documents.
  • High attention to detail, practical credit judgement and confidence in making consistent, evidence-based decisions within policy and delegated authority.
  • Clear verbal and written communication, with a calm, professional and respectful approach to customers.
  • A strong compliance mindset, including fair customer treatment, privacy, data security, accurate records and audit-ready documentation.
  • Organisation, resilience and a positive team approach, with the ability to manage competing priorities and share knowledge without compromising quality.
