The Opportunity

The University of the South Pacific seeks to appoint a Lecturer or Senior Lecturer in the Discipline of Electrical and Electronic Engineering in the School of Information Technology, Engineering, Mathematics and Physics (STEMP).

The appointee will be required to contribute to the areas of Analog control engineering, Digital control engineering, and Advanced control engineering in the Electrical and Electronic Engineering discipline. They will be required to coordinate and teach, organize laboratory, and tutorial classes, mark, assist in administration duties, and counsel students at the undergraduate/postgraduate level, deliver a high standard of teaching, research and postgraduate student supervision.

Nature and Scope

The School of Information Technology, Engineering, Mathematics and Physics is one of the largest schools in the University of the South Pacific and is resourced to pursue excellence in teaching and research. The school offers several Undergraduate programs, including two Professional programmes in ICT (Bachelor of Networks & Security and Bachelor of Software Engineering) accredited by the Australian Computer Society, two Engineering programmes (Bachelor of Electrical and Electronics Engineering and Bachelor of Mechanical Engineering) accredited by Engineering New Zealand, Civil Engineering, Physics, Computer Science, Information Systems and Mathematics.

 The School also offers Postgraduate programmes in Information Technology, Cybersecurity, Mathematics, and Physics, as well as Master's and PhD programmes across all its disciplines.  The School is now considering interested staff who can join the dynamic team and take the School forward, with particular attention to new and expanding fields in Science and Technology, and a focus on the Pacific.

General Standard

Lecturer

  • A Lecturer is expected to make contributions to the teaching effort of the University and to carry out activities to maintain and develop their scholarly, research and/or professional activities relevant to the profession or discipline.
  • A Lecturer is expected to demonstrate excellent communication skills and the ability to network effectively and interact with a diverse range of students and staff.

Senior Lecturer

  • A Senior Lecturer is expected to make significant contributions to the teaching effort of a School, Institute, programme, or an interdisciplinary area.
  • A Senior Lecturer is also expected to play a major role in scholarship, research, and/or professional activities. A Senior Lecturer is expected to demonstrate excellent communication skills, and the ability to network effectively and interact with a diverse range of students and staff.

Specific Duties

To be considered for the position, applicants must have experience in:

  • course coordination, including marking and assessment,
  • preparation and delivery of lectures, tutorials, practical classes, demonstrations, workshops, student field excursions, clinical sessions, and studio sessions,
  • curriculum development,
  • academic counselling and consultation with students,
  • conducting of individual and/or collaborative research; and strengthening of one’s publication record in international refereed journals,
  • supervision of the programme of study of postgraduate students engaged in course work,
  • supervision of postgraduate research projects in accordance with the USP Postgraduate Research Supervision policy,
  • involvement in Paid Outside Work,
  • assigned administrative responsibilities, and
  • attendance at School/Institute meetings and/or membership of committees.

The People We Seek

A Lecturer is expected to have:

  • a PhD in the relevant discipline with relevant tertiary teaching and/or research experience; or
  • in exceptional cases, a Master’s degree or professional qualification with relevant teaching experience or relevant industry/professional experience or a significant research profile.
  • Other Minimum Qualification Requirements may be stipulated according to particular disciplinary requirements, following international standards.

A Senior Lecturer must have:

  • a PhD in the relevant discipline with relevant tertiary teaching experience and/or research experience; or
  • in exceptional cases, a Master’s degree or professional qualification with relevant teaching experience or relevant industry/professional experience or a significant research profile. For example, Profession-based disciplines;
  • in addition, a Senior Lecturer will normally require a record of demonstrable scholarly and professional achievement in the relevant discipline.
  • Other Minimum Qualification Requirements may be stipulated according to particular disciplinary 5 requirements, following international standards.

Contract Duration

The position is available for a term of five (5) years and may be renewed by mutual agreement.

Salary Range

FJ$90,493 to FJ$119,068 per annum 

FJ$122,768 to FJ$141,655 per annum
