The Opportunity

The University of the South Pacific seeks to fill the Lecturer in Geospatial Science position in the Discipline of Geography, Earth Science and Environment (DGESE) in the School of Agriculture, Geography, Environment, Ocean and Natural Sciences (SAGEONS). The position is of importance to the university’s teaching and research activities relating to Geospatial Science courses and programs. The SAGEONS offers the Bachelor of Geospatial Science as a prescribed program (two pathways) at USP. Geospatial Science (GS) is also offered as a major under USP’s Bachelor of Science program.

Nature and Scope

This position is essential for the continued delivery and expansion of the Geospatial Science program within SAGEONS. The appointee should be an expert in Geographical Information Systems.

Without this position the Geospatial Science program could not be offered at USP, and Discipline of Geography, Earth Science and Environment’s administrative obligations with regards to the GS courses and programs cannot be covered in the future.

Specific Duties

The appointee at Lecturer level will contribute to teaching undergraduate courses in Geographic Information Systems and geospatial data analysis. Teaching abilities and expertise should include fundamentals of Geographic Information Systems, geospatial data management, spatial modelling and analyses, spatial databases, and web-based GIS applications. Experience in spatial database design and geospatial analysis using both proprietary and open-source GIS platforms such as ArcGIS and QGIS software will be highly desirable.

Teaching may include undergraduate and postgraduate level courses across the Geospatial Science curriculum offered by SAGEONS in face to face, online, and blended modes, including laboratory demonstrations, field activity, and tutorials.

The appointee will also contribute to GS course development and revisions and will be expected to successfully secure some research grants (including external grants) in the thematic area of research while also supporting the University mission and goals as set out in the University Strategic Plan. The role includes assisting in administrative and outreach tasks as and when assigned by the Head of School (HOS), SAGEONS.

The People We Seek

To be considered for the Lecturer position, applicants must have:

i. a PhD in the relevant discipline;

ii. relevant tertiary teaching experience (normally 4 years) at undergraduate and postgraduate levels;

iii. good research publications in ranked journals with Quality of Research assessment at Lecturer level;

iv. ability to teach a range of standard topics in Geospatial Science;

v. experience in supervising Master scholars to completion; and

vi. excellent written and oral communication skills in English.

Preferences will be given to applicants with:

 - Willingness to undertake research as demonstrated by strong research publication records;

- Willingness to work as a member of a Pacific-oriented team;

- Experience in supervising PhD students to completion;

- Work experience in small island developing countries;

- Postgraduate Certificate in Tertiary Teaching (PGCTT) or equivalent;

- Experience in delivering courses online and by distant and flexible learning, in a multicultural environment;

- Experience in a range of online teaching tools and learning management system;

- Evidence of securing external grants; and

- Ability to work under limited supervision and coordinate a teaching team (e.g., part-time TAs, laboratory demonstrators, technicians).

Contract Duration

The position is available for a term of five (5) years and may be renewed by mutual agreement.

Salary Range

FJ$90,493 to FJ$119,068 per annum per annum
