Shore Cargo Handler (The Ministry of Public Works, Meteorological Services & Transport)

Job Description & Skills/Qualifications Required

The position is responsible for the safe loading, unloading and stowage of cargoes by prioritising cargo movement to avoid damage to goods and supplies. 

Key Responsibilities

The position will achieve its purpose through the following:

1. Actively contribute in maintaining the layout and cleanliness of the Government Shipping Services yard;

2. Actively contribute to the loading and unloading of cargoes and manage the operating of crane when required;

3. Ensuring the safe transiting of cargoes from vessel to shore;

4. Maintaining the safety storage of cargoes before and after loading, this will include stacking of cargo in transit shed or in hold of ship as directed by the supervisor; and

5. Actively contribute to all corporate requirements of the Ministry where required. 

 

Knowledge & Experience

  1. At least 6 to 12 months of work experience performing similar duties in a public or corporate environment;
  2. Some knowledge of safety and security practices with regards to loading and off-loading of cargoes; and
  3. Knowledge of Occupation, Health and Safety (OHS) in order to maintain safety standards.

 

Skills & Abilities

  1. Ability to contribute and work cooperatively within a team environment in order to meet timelines;
  2. Good communication skills;
  3. Ability to lift/carry a maximum weight of 25kg;
  4. Attention to detail;
  5. Ability to work with minimum supervision and follow instructions; and
  6. Service-oriented approach, with a commitment to supporting the operational and corporate environment of the organization.

 

Additional Information

Applicants for employment in the Ministry must be of good character, with a background that demonstrates their commitment to the public service values contained in the Fijian Constitution. Applicant must also be a Fijian Citizen, under 60, in sound health, with a clean police record. The selected applicant will be required to provide a medical certificate and police clearance prior to taking up duty.
