Forestry Officer - Wood & Non Wood project (Ministry of Forestry)

Job Description & Skills/Qualifications Required

The position is responsible for the technical delivery of research outputs including data collection, as well as capital project monitoring and reporting. 

Key Responsibilities

1. Undertake field- and desk-based research on wood and non-wood forest species, including resource characterisation, log sampling, wood property studies, product development, and durability trials and monitoring of lesser-known species, in accordance with approved methodologies and work programmes.

2. Conduct basic laboratory procedures for wood and non-wood research, including sample preparation, testing, measurement and documentation of results in line with established SOPs.

3. Manage and analyse research data, ensuring accurate data entry, database management and record keeping to support technical analysis and evidence-based recommendations.

4. Prepare technical reports, research papers and publications on wood and non-wood research outcomes for management, stakeholders and public dissemination.

5. Provide technical input on wood properties and utilisation, including veneer properties, workability and durability of lesser-known timber species, to support product development and value-adding opportunities.

6. Contribute to annual planning and budgeting preparation and in line with the approved annual operation plan and budget, ensure timely supervision of project activities, and prepare, validate, and submit Quarterly Project Progress Reports (QPPRs),

7. Engage stakeholders, including industry, communities, research institutions and partners, through consultations, awareness programmes and information sessions related to research activities and findings.

8. Manage project assets and supervise assigned technical staff, ensuring efficient resource use and compliance with occupational health and safety standards.

9. Actively contribute to all corporate requirements of the Ministry, including planning, budgeting, and recruitment and selection activities.

 

 

Knowledge & Experience

  1. 1. 2 to 3 years experience in undertaking research, including field and desk-based studies of forest wood and non-wood species.
  2. 2. Knowledge and experience in basic laboratory procedures, wood processing steps and procedures.
  3. 3. Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of wood properties, timber seasoning, grading, wood preservation procedures and relevant wood quality testing research methodologies.
  4. 4. Knowledge and experience in data management, technical report compilation and preparation of publications.

 

Skills & Abilities

  1. 1. Proficient computer skills with competence in data entry, analysis and interpretation
  2. 2. Ability to collate, organize and manage data using Excel spreadsheets and hard copy filing system.
  3. 3. Strong report-writing skills with the ability to produce high-quality reports for publications and for management, stakeholders, and the public.
  4. 4. Ability to effectively conduct awareness programs and stakeholder consultations with clear communication
  5. 5. Strong organisational and time management skills with the ability to meet deadlines through team leadership and individual effort.
  6. 6. Class 2 Drivers License (preferable)
