Agriculture Assistant (Ministry of Agriculture)

Job Description & Skills/Qualifications Required

The position is responsible to effectively implement all Agricultural Development Programs on Crop Extension Services to meet the goals and outputs of the Ministry.

Key Responsibilities

The position will achieve its purpose through the following key duties:

1. Assist and coordinate the proper implementation of agriculture development activities on assigned localities and districts.

2. Compile locality/district quality technical reports within planned timelines.

3. Implement and effectively monitor capital programs in the locality/district in line with approved annual work programs and budgetary provisions.

4. Provide quality technical crop extension advisory support and assist with the facilitation on the adoption of all appropriate technology and applied research to relevant stakeholders and farmers.

5. Monitor effectively all agricultural development activities within the assigned locality/districts to support Ministry strategic goals.

6. Provide relevant (weekly, monthly, quarterly and annual) reports on all agricultural services within timelines.

7. Assist in establishing and sustaining an effective and constructive relationship with farmers, clients and line agencies for the purpose of improving agriculture developments in the locality.

8. Actively contribute to corporate outcomes, undertake additional responsibilities as when required by Senior Management, foster change management, follows financial and human resource management guidelines, supervision of staff, budgeting, training and awareness, planning, provide policy advice and regulations, principles, and uphold integrity and standards in all aspects of work. 

Knowledge & Experience

  1. 1. At least two (2) years relevant work experience in a similar role or in a position equivalent in nature.
  2. 2. Proven working knowledge and experience in crop production, project management, crop husbandry and marketing.
  3. 3. Demonstrated experience to work in high performing teams, prudent financial engagement and physical resources.
  4. 4. Good understanding of traditional protocols.
  5. 5. Sound knowledge of relevant policies and legislations, Acts, Fijian (2013) Constitution.
  6. 6. Demonstrated experience in providing quality reports and feedbacks within timelines.

Skills & Abilities

  1. 1. Good written and verbal communication skills to work effectively with staffs and external stakeholders.
  2. 2. Demonstrated clear objectives and commit to effectively achieve disseminate agricultural information outcomes.
  3. 3. Demonstrated ability to think and innovate to solve complex problems in a resource constrained environment.
  4. 4. Good Computer skills with the capacity to utilise tools and programs to support the operations of the Ministry.
  5. 5. Ability to multiple task and work under pressure in a resource constrained working environment.
  6. 6. Ability to deal with confidential information and maintain professionalism, integrity and work ethics.
  7. 7. Service oriented approach, with a commitment to supporting the operations of the division with confidence and decisive.
  8. 8. Ability to Drive with valid Defensive Driving Certificate and Full License Classes 2 is advantage but not compulsory.

Additional Information

Applicants for employment must be Fijian Citizens, under Age 60, in sound health, with a clear police record. The successful applicant will be required to provide a medical certificate and police clearance as a condition of employment for substantive appointment.
