Assistant Carpenter (Ministry of National Planning Development and Statistics)

Job Description & Skills/Qualifications Required

The Assistant Carpenter is responsible for carrying out a wide range of carpentry and Joinery tasks, including the construction, installation, maintenance and repair of wooden structures and fittings across government facilities under the supervision of the Carpenter. This role also ensures that public buildings and infrastructure are safe, functional, and maintained to a higher standard.

Key Responsibilities

The position will achieve its purpose through the following:

1. Assists in perform construction, installation and repair of wooden structures, fittings and fixtures according to assigned specifications and standards

2. Assists in conducting routine and emergency maintenance on wooden components of government buildings and infrastructure

3. Properly use maintain and secure carpentry tools machinery and equipment’s

4. Work collaborate with fellow tradespeople, Foremen and supervisors to ensure smooth project executions while communicating effectively on work progress

5. Accurately record work completed, time taken and materials needed

6. Maintain a safe and clean work environment and use tools and equipment’s responsibly

7. Deliver high quality workmanship in all carpentry tasks

8. Demonstrated ability to follow verbal and written instructions from supervisors or foreman precisely and without delays

Knowledge & Experience

  1. 1. Solid understanding of carpentry and joinery techniques; construction, repair and finishing of wooden structures and fixtures
  2. 2. Knowledge of woodworking tools materials and equipment’s
  3. 3. Familiarity with building codes construction safety standards
  4. 4. Ability to read and interpret technical plans and drawings
  5. 5. Awareness of occupational health and safety in workshops and construction sites
  6. 6. At least 2 years of hands on experience in carpentry work
  7. 7. Proven experience in construction, installation and maintenance.
  8. 8. Experience in working under minimal or no supervision in order to complete assigned tasks on time

Skills & Abilities

  1. 1. Skilled in cutting, shaping, assembling and installing wooden structures, fittings and furniture’s.
  2. 2. Competent in measuring and marking materials precisely
  3. 3. Strong time management skills with the ability to meet deadlines and prioritize tasks
  4. 4. Attention to detail and commitment to high quality workmanship
  5. 5. Good verbal and written communication skills
  6. 6. Ability to solve minor technical issues on the job and adjusting to onsite or workshop challenges

PERSONAL CHARACTER AND ELIGIBILITY
