Marine Conservation Officer

Plantation Island Resort is seeking a passionate and knowledgeable Marine Conservation Officer to support and promote our environmental sustainability initiatives. This role is responsible for implementing marine conservation programs, monitoring reef and marine ecosystems, educating guests and team members on environmental practices, and assisting with the protection and preservation of the resort’s natural marine environment. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in marine conservation, excellent communication skills, and a genuine passion for environmental stewardship and sustainable tourism.

Key Responsibilities:

·        Construct and perform basic maintenance on nursery structures

·        Monitoring and cleaning of coral fragments in the nursery

·        Collect and analyse data on the survival/ mortality of coral fragments on ropes, cookies, and A-frames

·        Monitor marine life exposed to pollutants within the boundaries of Plantation Island and Lomani Resort

·        Perform monthly coral predator removals

·        Prepare detailed reports for Activities Manager, Coral Project Supervisor, General Manager and Resort Manager including the progress of the coral program, challenges, and goals achieved on a monthly basis

·        Interact with the guests in a positive, professional and friendly manner, demonstrating a genuine passion for our marine environment and it’s conservation

·        Provide education to guests on the coral program activities including the coral nursery tour, fish house and coral cookie (cement disc) making, coral gardening, and the hosted marine awareness presentation

·        Monitor inner and outer reefs to compare status of coral restoration sites, and to locate potential hot pockets for harvesting

·        Daily cleaning and management of the marine museum

·        Strive for continued museum improvement by implementing innovative ideas and updated factual information displayed in an interesting and engaging way

·        Advise the hotel on the creation and implementation of environmentally friendly policies

·        Lead marine environmental education programs for resort staff

·        Any other reasonable task as requested by your manager

About You:

·        A tertiary qualification in Marine Biology, Environmental Science or similar, preferably at degree level

·        Willingness to spend long hours in the water in varied weather conditions

·        Strong swimming skills and ability to free-dive up to 3 metres

·        Valid SCUBA certification is required

·        Good communication skills and ability to connect with a wide range of guests, on both an individual and group basis

·        Valid water safety or First Aid/CPR qualification

·        Demonstrated advocacy for environmentally friendly practices

·        Demonstrated ongoing research into best practices in the fields of coral gardening and reef restoration
