Laboratory Technician

The University of Fiji seeks an innovative and dynamic Lab Technician to join the Umanand Prasad School of Medicine and Health Sciences (UPSM & HS) at the Saweni Campus. The successful candidate shall be responsible to the Dean of Umanand Prasad School of Medicine and Health Sciences, through the Head of the Department.

Responsibilities:

• Provide direct technical support to learning teaching of medical science-based subjects by ensuring all laboratory activities are carried out in accordance to School policies and practices.
• Ensure that the laboratory is cleaned /sanitized and kept in an orderly manner and has a thorough knowledge on infection control.
• Responsible for hazardous/corrosive chemicals, specimen (biological and non-biological), laboratory equipment, instruments, manikins, models and glassware.
• Ensure all instrumentations/equipment is functioning properly.
• To set-up the lab for practical classes and ability to do laboratory demonstrations in Physiology, Anatomy, Pathology, Microbiology, Bio-Chemistry, Internal-Medicine, Surgery, Pediatrics, Forensic Medicine, Obstetrics & Gynecology and Community Medicine.
• Comprehensive knowledge of the technical specialty, ability to apply a wide range of concepts, techniques and practices to carry out broad laboratory objectives.
• Liaise with teaching staff to meet lab requirements and assist during practical exams.
• Knowledge on operations of medical equipment/instruments such as autoclave machine, incubator, ECG machine, blood pressure meter manual and automatic, diagnostic sets, spirometer, manikins, simulators for clinical medicine (Surgery, Internal Medicine, Pediatrics, Obstetrics Gynecology, Community Medicine and Forensic Medicine).
• Undertake a range of administrative functions at School and University Level as and when required.
• Assist in laboratory researches of staff and students.
• The University requires all staff to proactively undertake community, environment and social responsibilities as well as participate in University.

Requirements:

• Applicants must have a Bachelor’s degree in Laboratory Sciences/ Health Sciences/Bachelors in Sciences particularly in medical laboratory field and at least 3 years of relevant work experience in similar field.
• Possess deep appreciation of the multiplex diversity of the University of Fiji’s staff and students including in gender, culture and expression.
• Possess keen understanding of the human values foundation of the University.
• Good communication skills and a high level of competence in ICT use for teaching and learning, especially in on-line platforms, are required.
• Applicant with a valid group 2 driver’s license is highly recommended
• Possess an understanding of the University of Fiji’s vision, mission and goals as expressed in the Strategic Plan 2022-2026.

Salary Band: $32,682.65 - $40,494. 60

The University offers a three-year full-time contract with renewals subject to performance reviews.
