PROJECT CONTEXT
Miya Water is delivering a Performance-Based Water Loss Reduction contract for the Water Authority of Fiji (WAF) across the Suva-Nausori Water Supply System, financed by the Asian Development Bank. The project covers approximately 1,200 km of distribution network serving around 74,000 customers. The Technician will support Lead Technicians in network cadastre validation, valve investigation, network operations, asset commissioning, maintenance, and plumbing activities across assigned DMA zones.
ROLE OVERVIEW
Miya Water is seeking two (2) proactive Technicians to support the Suva-Nausori Non-Revenue Water (NRW) Reduction Project. Reporting to the Lead Technician, the role will assist with daily field execution, including asset verification, valve locating and exercising, DMA boundary checks, network operations, minor maintenance, and plumbing works. The role requires safe work practices, attention to detail, and professional conduct in public areas and customer premises.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Field Support: Assist the Lead Technician with daily work preparation, site set-up, route execution, and completion of assigned field tasks.
- Field Execution: Support approved field methodologies while maintaining accurate, complete, and consistent results in the following main tasks:
- Network Cadastre Validation: Locate, verify pipes, valves, chambers, hydrants, fittings, meters, and other network assets using field maps, GPS, pipe locators, and visual checks.
- Valve Investigation & Network Operations: Support valve locating, inspection, exercising, assessment, isolations, Zero Pressure Tests (ZPT), DMA boundary checks, flushing, and pressure monitoring.
- Asset Commissioning & Maintenance: Assist with commissioning checks, chamber cleaning, and asset preventive and corrective maintenance.
- Plumbing: Assist service connection support, fitting installation, and minor repair activities.
- Tools & Equipment: Use and maintain pipe locators, listening sticks, GPS devices, tablets, hand tools, and PPE safely and responsibly.
- Safety Compliance: Follow approved safety procedures, traffic controls, permit requirements, and instructions from the Lead Technician or Supervisor.
- Records & Reporting: Capture field notes, photos, GPS points, asset condition details, and daily progress updates using approved forms and digital applications.
- Community Conduct: Communicate respectfully with customers and the public, support property access arrangements, and represent the project professionally.
REQUIRED TECHNICAL PROFILE
- Education: Certificate, Trade (Class III or Certificate III) qualification in plumbing, civil works, utilities, surveying, water operations, or a related field. Relevant hands-on field experience will be considered.
- Experience: At least 2 years of field experience in water utilities, plumbing, construction, maintenance, surveying, or related outdoor works.
- Water Network Knowledge: Basic understanding of water distribution networks, valves, fittings, meters, chambers, service connections, and field maps is advantageous.
- Plumbing & Field Skills: Able to use hand tools, assist with pipe and fitting works, open and inspect chambers, identify visible leaks, and support safe reinstatement activities.
- Tools & Technology: Comfortable using smartphones, tablets, digital forms, photos, and GPS-enabled devices. Willingness to learn GIS survey apps, pipe locators, and field equipment.
- Soft Skills: Reliable, punctual, safety-conscious, and able to work well in a team with good communication, attention to detail, and problem-solving ability.
- Work Environment: Comfortable working outdoors in varying field conditions, walking between sites, carrying field equipment, and interacting with the public.
Other Qualifications
- Must be a Fiji citizen
- Proficient in English (oral and written)
- Fluency in Fiji Hindi and/or iTaukei is highly advantageous for community engagement and field de-escalation.
- Valid driver’s license (preferred)
