Senior Bookkeeper- AU

Job Description & Skills/Qualifications Required

The Senior Bookkeeper is responsible for overseeing the organization's day-to-day financial recordkeeping and accounting operations. This role ensures the accuracy and integrity of financial data, manages complex bookkeeping activities, supports month-end and year-end processes, and provides financial reporting to management. The Senior Bookkeeper may also mentor junior bookkeeping staff and assist with process improvements and training requirements

Key Responsibilities

  • Manage end-to-end bookkeeping activities
  • Oversee financial accounts and ensure compliance with standard accounting practices
  • Prepare and review GST returns (AU)
  • Handle BAS preparation and manage ATO compliance requirements
  • Process payroll and ensure timely PAYG filings
  • Perform bank reconciliations and maintain accurate financial records
  • Reconcile invoices and bills
  • Prepare and analyze monthly management reports
  • Assist with budgeting and cash flow forecasting
  • Manage Accounts Payable (AP) and Accounts Receivable (AR) functions
  • Build and maintain strong client relationships while delivering exceptional client service
    Collaborate closely with internal teams to enhance deliverables and maintain operational efficiency

Financial Reporting

  • Prepare monthly, quarterly, and annual financial reports.
  • Generate profit and loss statements, balance sheets, and cash flow reports.
  • Assist management with budgeting and forecasting activities.
  • Analyze financial discrepancies and recommend corrective actions.

Payroll & Compliance

  • Oversee payroll processing and ensure compliance with applicable laws and regulations.
  • Prepare and file tax-related documentation, including VAT/GST and other statutory returns as required.
  • Ensure compliance with accounting standards and company policies.
  • Support external audits and provide requested documentation.

Month-End and Year-End Close

  • Lead month-end and year-end closing activities.
  • Prepare journal entries, accruals, and adjustments.
  • Reconcile balance sheet accounts and investigate variances.
  • Coordinate with accountants, auditors, and financial advisors.

Process Improvement & Leadership

  • Review and improve bookkeeping procedures and internal controls.
  • Train and mentor junior bookkeeping staff.
  • Assist with accounting software implementation and optimization.
  • Support finance projects and system upgrades.

Qualifications

Education

  • Bachelor's degree in accounting, Finance, Business Administration, or a related field.
  • CPA/CIMA/ACCA or CA
  • Professional accounting certifications are an advantage (e.g., Certified Bookkeeper, Accounting Technician, or equivalent).

Experience

  • 5+ years of progressive bookkeeping or accounting experience.
  • Experience in full-cycle bookkeeping and financial reporting.
  • Prior supervisory or team leadership experience preferred.

Technical Skills

  • Proficiency in accounting software such as:
    • QuickBooks
    • Xero
    • Spotlight
    • Hubdoc
    • Microsoft Excel & MS Office Suite
  • Strong understanding of accounting principles and financial controls.
  • Experience with payroll systems and bank reconciliations.
