Job Description & Skills/Qualifications Required

The University of Fiji is seeking a dynamic, creative and suitably qualified senior academic to join the University’s academic team in teaching, research and outreach activities in the field of Education. For senior appointments, the University now places particular emphasis on proven research and publications at a high level of competency in ranked journals and Global South/Pacific epistemologies in Education. The position is based at Samabula Campus, but the successful candidate may be required to work from other University sites and campuses when required. The successful candidate will be responsible to the Dean of the School of Humanities and Arts through the Head of Department and will be required to take a strong and active leadership role in the Education programme, and in academia, at the University.

Responsibilities:

  • Pursue excellence in research and publications, exploration of new epistemologies in Education, teaching, learning, course coordination, and curriculum development in the field of Education, with a particular focus on Inclusive Education, Education Leadership and Administration, contemporary heutagogical practices and learner-centred approaches and Early Childhood Education, while engaging in other academic, research, and service activities as required at the relevant levels;
  • Fulfil the Minimum Qualification Requirements (MQR) of the University at the relevant level;
  • Ensure an excellent research and publication record in ranked journals and books;
  • Keep updated on published articles & research reports on an annual basis;
  • Contribute to the diverse research strengths of the Department/School/University;
  • Provide academic and research leadership to the Department and School;
  • Regularly offer seminars and papers in areas of expertise to the University Community;
  • Participate in Committee, Departmental, and other administrative meetings;
  • Provide training and mentoring to early and mid-career academics in the School and University-wide;
  • Review methods and teaching materials in the School and make recommendations for improvement;
  • Assist with student recruitment, interviews, and academic counselling sessions;
  • Provide mentoring to students in relation to the emergence of new challenges in the discipline & various strategies for mitigating these issues;
  • Contribute to the development and delivery of programmes that strengthen pre-service and in-service teacher capabilities, including the integration of contemporary educational theories, digital learning technologies, inclusive education practices, and culturally responsive heutagogy;
  • Understand & facilitate the University’s heutagogic and human values focus in higher education;
  • Participate in community engagement; and
  • Ensure the School and Department fulfil its Strategic Plan outputs and outcomes and provide regular reports to the Senate on new developments in the relevant field.

Requirements:

  • A PhD in the Education or any other relevant field with at least 6 years of tertiary teaching experience in an academic setting;
  • Must have a record of demonstrated scholarly and professional achievement in the relevant disciplines with demonstrated ability to teach undergraduate programmes as well as post-graduate programmes through in-person, online and Hyflex or hybrid modes;
  • Expected to have experience in course, programme, and research development as well as curriculum design and should have peer-reviewed journal publications;
  • Must have a good status in international academia in relation to the relevant field of expertise;
  • Must be able to demonstrate the ability to supervise students at the Masters and PhD levels as well as teach at the undergraduate level;
  • Should possess a deep appreciation of the multiplex diversity of the University of Fiji’s staff and students, including in gender, culture and expression;
  • Previous experience in securing research grants and ability to organise high-level conferences and seminars for members of the public; and
  • Must possess a keen understanding of the human values foundation of the University.

The University requires all staff to proactively undertake community, environment and social responsibilities as well as participate in University Committees in accordance with the themes established by the Strategic Plan 2022-2026.

Salary Band: $77,185.98 – $98,450.86

The University offers a three-year full-time contract with renewals subject to performance reviews.
