Heavy Vehicle Technician

Job Description & Skills/Qualifications Required

Purpose of the Role

The Heavy Vehicle Technician is accountable for ensuring functionality and reliability of Heavy Machineries, Engines, Mechanical Systems, and the smooth running of day-to-day maintenance programs to optimize Fleet Services.  The Heavy Vehicle Technician will focus on the maintenance of all Fleet Assets operated by Fiji Airports and their respectively deliverables in accordance with his/her set KPI’s. The safety of the Fleet Asset and its end users are of utmost priority and this needs to be considered when carrying out any duties associated with this position.

Key Accountabilities:

  • Build and assemble machines or mechanical components according to requirements for all Major/Minor heavy vehicles and equipment at Fiji Airports.
  • To undertake inspection of machines, engines, transmissions etc. and run diagnostic tests to discover functionality in accordance with Manufacturers Guidelines.
  • Be part of running an efficient maintenance operation which can fulfil operational and customer demand and meet set targets.
  • Conduct servicing and maintenance of heavy vehicles in accordance with Manufacturers Guidelines aiming for maximum reliability.
  • Responsible for the safety of individuals of the team and that of those impacted by any maintenance activity.
  • Understand and work in accordance with the company’s quality requirements.
  • Perform effective diagnosis of breakdowns and timely repair of equipment to maximize availability.
  • Perform scheduled planned preventative maintenance in accordance with manufacturers requirements to minimize unplanned downtime.
  • Oversees both the operational and administrative duties such as:
  • Ensuring vehicle reports are completed and submitted on time.
  • All vehicles under Fleet management section are well maintained and serviced.
  • Read and Interpreting Technical Manuals and Schematics
  • Analysis of issues to root cause and development of countermeasures, improvement actions and/or suggestions to improve.
  • Control and sourcing maintenance tools, equipment, and spares.
  • Document breakdowns, identifying root cause and remedial action to help identify and resolve recurring issues.
  • Understand and work in accordance with mandatory requirements of Health, Safety and Environmental requirements.
  • Provide consultation on correct maintenance and preventative measures for machines or vehicle users.
  • Apply specific technical skills as required to support expediting issues quickly to minimize downtime.
  • Submit daily work progress report and equipment status updates to Manager Fleet Services.
  • Lead the development of innovative solutions to unique problems.
  • Carry out standby duties for operational departments (Security, Fire, Airside, Fleet transportation and standby vehicles).
  • Undertake any other responsibilities as assigned by the Manager/GM

Key Challenges/ Decision/ Success Factors

  • Must meet his/her individual annual KPI that will be evaluated annually to determine performance progress.
  • Maintain an appropriate level of skills and monitor technology developments of each model.
  • Have thorough knowledge of the principles and practices of vehicle maintenance and repair.
  • Assurance of the safety and manufacturers standards to improve availability and reliability.
  • To ensure that work sites and facilities are safe and secure, and that appropriate action is taken to rectify deficiencies.
  • To assist in the development of quality management principles and apply these effectively to all processes in the relevant.
  • To assist in the development of vehicle usage/ limitations awareness in accordance with the manufacturer’s guidelines.
  • To monitor vehicle usage and report through data gathered during emergency repairs. Good understanding of customer expectations and deliverables with an awareness of the impact of failure/cost of poor quality.

 

Qualifications, Professional Knowledge and Experience:

  • Certificate IV in Heavy Commercial Vehicle or equivalent.
  • Experience: At least 3 years’ experience working as a Heavy Vehicle Technician on all makes of vehicles and a clear understanding of Diesel Engines.
  • Clean driving record (Group 2,6,7,8,9) and Valid Defensive Driving.
  • Good interpersonal skills and customer focused.
  • Good communication skills
  • Be medically and physically fit
