Labour Officer - Legal (Ministry of Employment, Productivity & Industrial Relations)

Job Description & Skills/Qualifications Required

The position is responsible to assists in delivery of social justice, maintaining good faith employment

relations, and having safe and Productivity driven workplaces by providing legal service to the

aggrieved workers and giving advice to the relevant stakeholders

 

 

Key Responsibilities

The position will achieve its purpose through the following;

1. Legal representation of cases in Employment Relations Tribunal and Employment Relations

Court.

2. Attend to meetings with clients and Employers representatives.

3. Address policy matters pertaining to the Employment Relations Act, Health and Safety at Work

Act 1994, and other relevant laws.

4. Draft legal submissions.

5. Conduct employment relations awareness as and when required.

6. Give legal advice when requested by senior management, and the relevant stakeholders.

7. Facilitate negotiations and settlement of cases referred including Trade Union Matters.

8. Facilitate mediation for both employers and workers where a case is referred to the Unit.

 

 

Knowledge & Experience

  1. 1. At least 5 years’ experience in a legal or similar Field
  2. 2. Have comprehensive understanding of employment law and practices including current Knowledge of employment case law and working knowledge of Employment Relations Promulgation 2007, Health and Safety at Work Act 1996.
  3. 3. A good understanding of all Acts, Decrees and the 2013 Fijian Constitution.
  4. 4. Experience in preparation of cases and representation in the Court system.
  5. 5. Knowledge in preparation of legal submissions

  1. 1. Demonstrated ability to conduct investigations.
  2. 2. High analytical skills with ability to assess multiple sides of an issue.
  3. 3. Ability to build and maintain effective working relationships and act with diplomacy and discretion when dealing with sensitive and confidential issues.
  4. 4. Good judgment, initiative, high sense of responsibility, tact and discretion with sensitivity to different cultures.
  5. 5. Ability to prioritize goals in order to meet strict deadlines and work additional hours as and when required.
  6. 6. Ability to interpret and produce reports within specified timeframe.
