IT Programmer

Job Description & Skills/Qualifications Required

The University of Fiji is seeking a dedicated and technically skilled professional to join our institution as the IT Programmer. The successful candidate will be responsible for defining, developing, testing, analyzing, and maintaining new and existing software applications and databases to support the University’s business requirements. This includes coding, designing, documenting, and modifying software programs and specifications throughout the production life cycle. The IT Programmer will report to the Director IT Services through the Manager IT Services. The successful candidate will be based at the Saweni Campus but may be required to work from other University Campuses and sites when required.

Responsibilities:

  • Collaborate with vendors in the conceptualization and development of new software programs and applications;
  • Analyze and assess existing business systems and procedures;
  • Assist in defining and documenting software requirements, objectives, deliverables, and specifications in collaboration with internal users and departments;
  • Assist in planning software development projects, including scoping, scheduling, and implementation;
  • Research and evaluate emerging software products, languages, and standards;
  • Liaise with vendors for implementation of new software products/systems and adaptation solutions;
  • Write, code, translate, and test software programs and applications according to specifications;
  • Develop programming scripts to enhance functionality and performance of applications;
  • Conduct software performance testing, debugging, and error correction;
  • Prepare reports, documentation, user manuals, and guidelines;
  • Train and support end users on new or modified programs;
  • Install, integrate, and maintain software and databases as required; and
  • Perform other IT-related tasks as directed by the Director ITS or the Manager ITS.

Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or Information Systems;
  • At least two (2) years’ experiences in a similar role;
  • Excellent understanding of coding methods, programming languages, and best practices;
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with proven attention to detail;
  • Experience developing test cases, test plans, and conducting software performance tests;
  • Knowledge of data privacy practices and laws;
  • Effective communication skills to liaise with both technical and non-technical staff;
  • Ability to work independently as well as in a team-oriented, collaborative environment;
  • Flexible and adaptable in learning and applying new technologies; and
  • Demonstrated high levels of initiative, integrity, and professionalism.

Skills & Experience:

  • Hands-on programming and software development experience;
  • Ability to research, analyze, and recommend innovative solutions for software-related issues;
  • Prior experience interviewing end-users to gather system and usability requirements;
  • Strong written, oral, and interpersonal communication skills; and
  • Ability to prioritize and execute tasks under pressure while meeting deadlines.

Salary Band: $32,682.65 – $40,494.60

The University offers a three-year full-time contract with renewals subject to performance reviews.
